After installation of the base system, log in as root. Then run the program "dselect". Press 'S' to select packages. Hit the space bar to get rid of the splash screen, (or read it.) Then hit '/' do to a search. Type in 'xserver' to do a search for xservers that my work for you. You can repeat the last search with '\'. When you find what you want, hit '+' to select it. Do something similar and search for gnome. Hit enter to return to the main menu. Select install, and hopefully everything will install for you. There's some documentation out there that you should read, unfortunately, I don't have any link handy for you. I'm also assuming that your new to debian.
