Hi,
  I usually do how it is explaned in the KERNEL-HOWTO. It`s

        make config (I use xconfig)
        make dep
        make clean
        make bzImage
        make modules
        make modules_install

  and it works for me.

  I recomend the KERNEL-HOWTO reading. It`s very good.
