The "cooler" hacks, particularly the OpenGL and other "shaped" hacks, are quite CPU intensive. If you 'nice' XScreensaver, you won't starve other processes. Note that if nothing else is running, you're only starving the idle process, which lives to be starved. Peace. -- Karsten M.
