Jussi, Thank you. Your method, using xv, works just fine. I had looked into xsetroot, but it seems to only work on bitmaps. When I tried xloadimage, it wanted to convert my .jpeg files to B/W. Since I already have xv I tried your method and it does just what I need it to do (now that I found the html version of the manual and the root options). Other suggestions were display, wmsetbg, esetroot, and chbg. These might work, as well, but, since I already have xv I will stick with it.
