Sounds more likely to be a hardware problem. Check cables with a cable tester and try changing the network card.
These problems aren't normal and a 486/32MB ram configured as a samba server for a small no of users should be ok. To answer the question on ethernet card bonding, it's possible to get 4-port network cards that support bonding. An example of this is the D-link 570TX. I've used this before as 4 separate nics, but not in the bonding mode.
