In Windows I recall something called Direct Cable Connection that allowed you to link two computers thru the parallel port. The GNU/Linux version of this appears to be PLIP (which I tried and failed at many many moons ago).
Failed?
Can you tell me why?
I used to use PLIP to have direct connection to computer that doesn't have NIC. I even have once use PLIP to install debian on an old laptop.
And yes, NIC to NIC also possible. Just twisted the cable connection.
Normal UTP: connect pin 1 - 1 2 - 2 3 - 3 6 - 6
Twisted / Cross UTP: connect pin 1 - 3 2 - 6 3 - 1 6 - 2
Good luck.
