Hi, right after upgrading to woody I still could use kdm to log in into my machine. But some days later this wouldn't work any longer: After login in as authorized user just restarts kdm. (Anyway instead of going into KDE I get the login screen again.)
I can start X (with startx) from the console without any problem, but neither kdm nor xdm work. As this is a problem many people seem to have I went through some of the suggestions I found, but nothing solved my problem: I deleted 90xfree86-common_ssh-agent and changed the one line in 99xfree86-common_start from "exec $realstartup" to exec $REALSTARTUP - no success. xdm reports the following errors: XBanner: Could not get the font, using 'fixed' (that's just for starting up xdm) and than for every try to log in: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xdm/Xsession: xrdb: command not found /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xdm/Xsession: egrep: command not found /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xdm/Xsession: xmodmap: command not found /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xdm/Xsession: grep: command not found /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xdm/Xsession: grep: command not found /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xdm/Xsession: grep: command not found twm: No such file or directory This looks to me as if there are either permissions or a path missing, but that's just my uninformed impression and wouldn't know how to either add necessary permissions (which?) or where to add the right path variables (again: where?). BTW, I'm using: XFree86 Version 3.3.6a / X Window System (protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 6300) Release Date: xx November 2000 under Linux 2.4.13 i686 [ELF] (as reported by the xserver, for me it's woody with a 2.2.19 kernel). Would be great, if somebody could help me here! Andreas Goesele
