I'd recommend that you go for a base install of Potato then commit the dist-upgrade to woody. That way you minimize breakage in the packaging system. To commit the dist-upgrade, you need to have a working connection to the internet (56kbps PPP is asking for trouble, better go for a highs-speed net connection)... Edit the /etc/apt/sources.list and point all references of stable to testing. Then run apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade. Suggest too that you should not be inside X during a dist-upgrade. You might update ssh in the process - and have a faulty install when ssh gets killed during replacement. Karsten M. Depends on how much tradeoff are you willing to let go really... Using branches other than stable risks you of some decreased stability.
