... you can't just run XF86Setup from the commandline because for that machine
a XF86_VGA16 Server isn't available?   That sounds common to me (on 
potato/alpha:)

Hopefully someone sends you an /etc/X11/XF86Config similar to your monitor
and grafic card.  Then edit this file.  If some autodetection tolds you to
use XF86_S3V then use XF86_SVGA instead!  But you may have other hardware.

May be 'xf86config' works for you if your hardware is in the database.
