"modprobe" each of

usb-uhci
hid
mousedev
keybdev

and point your mouse software (gpm or X) at /dev/input/mice


The relevant howto is the USB one.  It may be on linuxdoc.org, but if
not it is on the linux usb site (forgot the domain, sorry).
