Not that I want to add real info, but...

If you have a decent X host on your PC, hold down the ALT key for
meta. This should work 100% if

1) your X on your pc is setup to pass the alt to the X app and not to
windows. (this is in the input control panel for Exceed for
   instance).

2) You are running emacs (or Xemacs) as a X app and not in a term.

If you are running emacs in a terminal (not as an X app) then you need
some cooperation from your xterm. Again, on solaris this should
generally map to your alt key for meta.

Last resort, pressing escape and then the character you want will work
all the time. So, if you want M-f (meta forward) you can either hit
ALT-f or ESC f.

Make sense?

Now back to our emacs/vi proto-flame-fest.
