According to /usr/src/kernel-source-2.4.18/Documentation/sysrq.txt I have to set CONFIG_MAGIC_SYSRQ when configuring the kernel to enable this feature.
Yet, I do not find this key in .config nor under "make menuconfig".
Any hint what I'm missing here?

It's under "Kernel Hacking". You may need to say yes to Prompt for Development stuff in the Code Maturity part.
