The most important advantage is that no locking is required for maildir. Furthermore, operations on mail in maildirs (copying, deleted, etc.) tend to be faster because the entire folder does not have to be re-written as it would for mbox. The "all eggs not in one basket" is, IMO, the weakest argument for mbox vs. maildir.
