Pursuant I choose option 1 how do I tell dpkg to leave vpopmail alone?

The vpopmail packages in debian are quite out of date, and don't work
together with the courier-imap packages in debian.

That said, you have two choices:

1.  Compile from source (what I do)
2.  Fix the debian packages

The debian qmail works fine.
