What is it with people and not reading the links? Yes, if you look at the patch it certainly looks like it makes the 8500 work. I don't know personally, I own a 7500. Strange you have problems with gnome, I installed XFree86 4.2.0 (from source) in parallel with 4.1.0 and have had no problems whatsoever. Sounds like those debs you are using are broken.
