Hehehehehe, I actually figured it out a short bit after asking - I did have some old perl packages installed (perl-5.005-base, perl-5.005), but removing them didn't help. It seems to be a problem with dialog - after apt-getting dialog, I had some new files under /usr/lib/perl5/.../GetOpt/... (I compared with another testing box that works - that tree doesn't exist). dpkg -S confirmed that /usr/lib/perl5 belonged to dialog, so I removed dialog and installed whiptail instead.
