AFAIK the only reliable way to sync the Visor is to pause the Pilot-Sync daemon, press the button on the cradle, and then resume the daemon (on my gf's desktop the Pilot-Sync daemon is an applet on the taskbar). Also, the settings in Gnome for the device are: /dev/pilot, speed 38400 and a serial connection (this is strange because /dev/pilot is a symlink to /dev/ttyUSB1, but it works here).
