I have exim 3.35-1 working with PAM, but not specifically pam_unix . Is the trouble specific to that module? That would be surprising; if exim talks to PAM, it shouldn't care (or even be aware, really) of the underlying PAM modules in place. FWIW, I'm using it with pam_pwdfile to success. I point it at the same file I use to authenticate for my cyrus IMAP server, so users use the same login info for incoming and outgoing mail. Let me know how far you've gotten and what you need help with.
