Anders, Roman, Roberto: Thanks very much for your advice. For the record I'm running Sarge and had no problem with KDE or GNOME, rather liked them both in fact. Just looking now for ways to free up resources for big apps -- and spending a lot of time learning to be a linux admin for my system!
