Since VESA is a generic frame buffer driver it will work with almost any card, although not usually as well as a specific driver. Perhaps the name of the driver for your card in X.org has changed from Xfree86? Check out http://wiki.x.org/wiki/VideoDrivers for a list of which chip-sets use which x.org drivers.
