Thanks for the help! It fixed my problem and I was able to finish
compiling the kernel. I installed it and tried to boot to it, but I
keep getting a kernel panic. This stinks because right before the
panic I can see ALSA discovering the sound card. The error states:
VFS: Cannot open root device "sda1" or unknown-block(0,0)
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on

Unless you have a 3dfx card, remove all 3dfx and 3dlabs options in
make
menuconfig under character devices. This will be under "device
drivers"
-> "character devices". I had to take an hour to hunt this little
problem down.

Hi Jon,
Looking from your menu.lst file, it appears that you don't have an
initrd image. You need to make a custom one for your newly compiled
kernel. You can do this by issuing the command "mkinitrd -o
/boot/initrd.img-2.6.12.3 2.6.12.3" (I am assuming 2.6.12.3 is your
kernel version) .Then you need to make your entry for you new kernel
look like this in your menu.lst:
###############
title Debian GNU/Linux, kernel 2.6.12.3
root (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.12.3 root=/dev/sda1 ro
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.12.3 <---- This
line is new (do not include this comment).
