Probably the simplest way to get mail is to read your mail via webmail;
that is, call up webmail.isp.extension and most isps will give it to you
directly.

You can also use Pine in IMAP mode and you won't need Exim.  Other MUAs,
e.g., mutt will allow you to do anything Pine does, and more.  But, in my
experience, mutt in IMAP mode is a little more of a nuisance than Pine.
But I would recommend choosing the MUA that pleases you, and then try to
figure out how to make it as simple as you want.
