Okay, lately I've been thinking about Aptitude. Why is it that dist-upgrade with aptitude shows stuff to be done, while apt does not? Can anybody explain whats going on?
For instance: $ sudo apt-get dist-upgrade Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree... Done Calculating upgrade... Done The following packages have been kept back: avifile-divx-plugin avifile-mad-plugin avifile-mjpeg-plugin dvr gksu grip libavifile-0.7c102 lyx-common pconf-detect pstoedit snes9x-x 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 11 not upgraded. Now aptitude: $ sudo aptitude dist-upgrade Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree... Done Initializing package states... Done Reading task descriptions... Done The following NEW packages will be automatically installed: libgksuui1.0-1 libid3-3.8.3c2 libmagick++6c2 libplot2c2 libprinterconf0c2 libpstoedit0c2 libsnmpkit2c2 The following packages will be automatically REMOVED: dvr libgksuui1.0-0 libid3-3.8.3 libmagick++6 libplot2 libprinterconf0 libpstoedit0 libqt3c102-mt libsnmpkit2c102 snes9x-common The following packages have been kept back: avifile-divx-plugin avifile-mad-plugin avifile-mjpeg-plugin libavifile-0.7c102 lyx-common The following NEW packages will be installed: libgksuui1.0-1 libid3-3.8.3c2 libmagick++6c2 libplot2c2 libprinterconf0c2 libpstoedit0c2 libsnmpkit2c2 The following packages will be REMOVED: dvr libgksuui1.0-0 libid3-3.8.3 libmagick++6 libplot2 libprinterconf0 libpstoedit0 libqt3c102-mt libsnmpkit2c102 snes9x-common The following packages will be upgraded: gksu grip pconf-detect pstoedit snes9x-x 5 packages upgraded, 7 newly installed, 10 to remove and 5 not upgraded. Need to get 2723kB of archives. After unpacking 7945kB will be freed. -- .''`. Arthur H.
