Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't hyperthreading start at 2.8GHz? Hell I even have a 2.8 that doesn't have HT... the flag is there in cpuinfo, but no second cpu. I'm betting that's your problem, you believe it when cpuinfo says you have HT... I don't think you actually do though. Do a google search for "proc/cpuinfo ht flag" and you will find that most (all?) p4's have the flag set, but not all support HT.
