If XMMS won't play some foo.wav, type "file foo.wav" and see what details you get. I discovered a while back http://lists.debian.org/debian-user/2004/03/msg04680.html that not all WAV files are equal. If the file is the wrong subtype of WAV, you can use sox to reformat it.
