For me, it works to do this: $ kinput2 -canna -xim -kinput & $ export LANG=ja_JP; export LC_ALL=ja_JP;export XMODIFIERS="@im=kinput2" $ your_application & probably the LANG and LC_ALL exports are not relevant.
