ok, hadn't thought about testing. will try (2) -- if that doesn't work, will attempt the abysmally slow (1) (only have Ubuntu livecd, which runs very slow on my aging g3). Unfotunately I think I do need an initrd -- my / is on a scsi disk so scsi support needs to be preloaded.
