I just installed the debian package that's distributed from the W3C with
much better luck!
I used: http://www.w3.org/Amaya/Distribution/amaya_gtk-8.0-1_i386.deb
dpkg -i amaya_gtk-8.0-1_i386.deb
I did the same and it installed with no broken dependencies (I have some Perl packages that needed up to date gtk). It now gets a little bit further:

*** Amaya: Irrecoverable error ***
At least this gives a hint that there might be a problem with fonts, so there's some chance I might be able to track it down.
Thanks for your help, Emma. Cheers, Dave
