Finally sorted this one: Denis Barbier responded to my post to the bugtracker: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=345454
The solution, in my case, was to replace the deprecated 'uk' with 'gb' as the keyboard layout in xorg.conf Switching consoles now works.
