Are you using lpr or cups? I think you can find out by checking if /etc/init.d/cupsys exists, if it does you have cups installed. I don't know about lpr. If you are using cups, try issuing an '/etc/init.d/cupsys stop' then turn the printer on. If that works (doesn't try and print anything), try to delete any jobs (point your browser at localhost:631) and issue '/etc/init.d/cupsys start' and see if it works correctly. If you have no jobs queued, I'm not sure where to go.
