No that has nothing to do with low latency. Ripping in 2.4 kernels only works in PIO mode... Your cpu load should be very high. You could test a cdaudio-DMA patch from Andrew Morton. The latest version (2.4.20-pre5) applies with offsets to 2.4.21 but still works correctly. You can find it somewhere here: http://www.zipworld.com.au/~akpm/linux/patches/2.4/ Low Latency together with the preemptive kernel patch improve circumstances like playing a video without hickhucks and compiling a kernel at the same time.
