If you bought the parts, then you certainly know if you bought an Intel, SPARC or AMD cpu, if you bought a 64bit cpu, serial ATA or IDE disks, etc. So, if you bought an AMD or Intel cpu, try first the i386 disks. They will most likely work no matter what since it's the most common architecture. If you're worried about particular hardware, get yourself a KNOPPIX disk and see what it detects. A friend of mine used this technique to discover his hardware that came with XP because he wanted to run Win2K instead and Win2K has no hardware detection what so ever. ...so of course I bugged him that he should have just run Linux anyway, but he needed it for work and games.
