thanks to everybody for useful hints. i haven't heard the noise for some 
time now, but as soon as it appears again i have many possibilities how 
to check what's going on.

so far, i checked lm-profiler during normal operation and didn't find 
anything suspicious... so let's wait for the problem showing up again.
