To use the CUPS webadmin page, the username is 'root' and the password is the password of 'root'. I do not remember any difficulties with CUPS under Sarge. When I switched to Etch there were a few problems, but these disappeared a week or two ago when I upgraded to CUPS 1.2.2-1.
