Why?
it works fine here (though you have to enter the full path since /sbin
is not in the path for a normal user...
/sbin/ifconfig should actully work (though you wont be able to change
anything of courese)

the "ip" programm from iproute does actually install into /bin so no
problem(not even the $PATH) for just calling
"ip a"
