Most google searches suggest .Xclients, .xinitrc or .xsessions,
ITYM .xsession (singular).
On debian, when booting via a graphical login manager (I use KDM)
these do not appear to be read by the system.
Both KDM and GDM offer the concept of "sessions"; you want to make sure that you're using the "Debian" session, not one that goes straight into GNOME or KDE without reading other dotfiles.
