I'll have to mostly pass on this one. I might be inclined to file a bug
(probably against xserver-xfree86) if there isn't one already mentioning
crashiness with your video card ...

You could try 'xset s activate' as a test of whether it's X's default
screensaver stuff kicking in. If so, 'xset s off' disables that. I'm not
sure whether this affects GNOME's screensaver, though.

syslogd does this; it's occasionally useful if a machine crashes and you
want some idea of when it happened. You can turn it off using the '-m 0'
option to syslogd, which you can put in the SYSLOGD="" line in
/etc/init.d/sysklogd.

It's not related to your first problem.
