there is probably some dpkg-reconfigure command to nmake it ask you again, but in the meantime -- go into aptitude interactive mode, find your current kernel and markit with "m" to change it to a manual instead of automatic install. that way it will keep you current kernel even as it install a new one. this is being discussed all over this list right now, so read the very recent archives.
