If all you need are the routing functions, then buy a consumer router for $50. Much easier that way, and silent: no CPU fan, no power supply fan, no spinning HDD. Did you google for: "linux router howto"? The fist link is specific to Gentoo, but can easily be interpreted into The Debian Way. Another way is to use a floppy disk distro. I used to use floppyfw.
