It is in Etch and Sid. Just install fontconfig if in Sarge. It is part of the separation of binaries, optional binaries, docs, common and configs effort. Do the "dpkg-reconfigure -plow fontconfig" and answer "Native" hinting, "Auto" for subpixel crap and "yes" for enable bit-mapped.
