To let xmms talk to arts, one should install "xmmsarts" and select the arts 
output plugin in xmms (libartsout.so). 
A few time ago I hadn't done this on my machine, I used the alsa plugin 
before. When running xmms and kmix (mixer for arts) together, my sytem always 
crashed. So I think it's better to use this plugin when running KDE.
