Have you tried the fglrx packages (fglrx-driver and fglrx-kernel-src)? I installed these recently on a Thinkpad X61M and got 3d acceleration. I can't remember the exact steps I used (and the machine is not here at present to check) but it's explained in the docs and there is stuff on Google about doing it.
