This doesn't work either.
I am a bit of a loss to whats wrong. I have /dev/pts directory, but its
seems unable to create anything in it.

Hi Alan,
are you able to get ssh access to the box? ssh should allocate a new pts
upon login. Or run screen from the command line, preferably before X
starts? I guess this way we could start to narrow down the problem a bit
more
