I had the same trouble. In any case, I think
it's a not normal situation... It's a bug!
It is certainly a bug. If the Debian package doesn't put the modules
where they need to be, then it is a Debian bug. I opened Bug#420523
on it.
Oh, and Bug#420135 for the fact that the Debian nvidia-kernel-source
won't build with kernel 2.6.20.
