The most robust medium is HDD. Dedicate a complete drive to backup, preferably on a different machine or an external drive. Rdiff-backup is good because you can browse the backup directly eg if you just want to examine/restore a particular file. Rdiff-backup stores reverse diffs so you can also get access to previous versions of a file.
