G.L., First of all, welcome to the wonderful world of Debian. Please make sure to turn off html for your mail messages to the list. Many folks here use text based mail readers, and it makes the messages unnecessarily large. 1. Are you using Cable/DSL, dial-up, local network? It is difficult to help you diagnose network connectivity issues without knowing how you are trying to connect. Please provide plenty of detail. 2. Once you are logged in, you can execute 'startx' to bring up Xwindows if you have it installed. If it is not yet installed, you can run 'apt-get install kde' or 'apt-get install gnome' to get a basic graphical system installed. Since you are having trouble getting out to the net I assume you are using the installation CDROM, so you will need to simply insert it when prompted.
