Debian installs Tomcat5.5 and Tomcat5.5-webapps under group "nogroup". If you change the group Tomcat5.5 won't restart. So this is what I did, as root: adduser myuser nogroup cd /usr/share chmod 770 tomcat5.5 -R chmod 770 tomcat5.5-webapps -R
