Its only getting worse. Just look at the ratio to "unix" type questions to "point-clicky lindows" type questions on this list. If you want to get your hands dirty on a great UNIX, try OpenBSD. It works, its secure, but its not as easy as Debian's install once and just do one-liner upgrades. OTOH, it screams on my 486 where Etch crawls.
