Anyway, in case anyone else is struggling with this: Taking hints from Joey Hess, I did something like: cd /var/lib/dpkg/info cp xserver-xfree86.templates xserver-xfree86.templates.old sed s/^_// xserver-xfree86.templates.old > xserver-xfree86.templates (I actually did that sed transformation to /var/cache/debconf/templates.dat first; it probably wasn't necessary) And it worked.
