Well, then move that production server to another OS because at the rate
Linux has kernel bugs (as in, the rate at which there have been kernel
security updates), if your box isn't vulnerable now, it will be soon.

Yeah, mine died upgrading libc6 too. However, Etch itself runs just
fine on my more powerful boxes. On my very old boxes, I run OpenBSD.
